Safety on the job is a right that every worker in Illinois has. Even if you work in a hazardous industry, there are safety protocols and equipment for that industry that reduce your chances of having an accident or getting injured. It is your employer’s responsibility to provide you with safety equipment and your responsibility to use it. If your employer fails to provide you with equipment, you do have the ability to take action.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration explains that you have the right to expect protection from hazards on the job and that your employer must provide you with the equipment to protect you. You have the right to report your employer for taking shortcuts or not providing what you need to stay safe. OSHA has a toll-free phone number to call if you want to report something. You also receive protection for making a report. Your employer cannot fire you or take other action against you for reporting a hazardous situation.
Not only does your employer have to give you the proper safety equipment but also, your employer should provide you with adequate training. You need to be aware of possible hazards and how to prevent them or guard against them. Your employer should abide by all OSHA safety regulations. If you see any violations, you can report them.
