How do brain injuries affect emotional stability?

After a resident of Illinois suffers from a brain injury, they face many problems. They may deal with physical or mental complications. They may even deal with emotional complications. The latter is a category that does not get the same attention as the first two. But it is often just as impactful.

Today we look at how brain injuries affect emotional stability. We will examine victims of traumatic brain injury (TBI). We will see how these injuries affect their emotional stability.

TBI sufferers and mental health problems

The Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center looks brain injuries. In particular, they examine the emotional problems that occur in the wake of a brain injury. There are several emotional problems that medical professionals see in many TBI sufferers. They include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Irritability and quick temper
  • Mood swings

Mood swings happen when a certain part of the brain suffers damage. This area of the brain controls emotional regulation. When dysfunctional, a victim cannot control their emotional response well. This can lead to other issues. For example, many people who were not irritable before may become irritable.

Anxiety and depression related to TBIs

Anxiety and depression are disorders that share a high comorbidity rate. This means if you have one, chances are higher that you will have the other, too. In cases of TBI, a victim may develop anxiety or depression as a result of their changed life. TBIs make it hard to comprehend the world around you. Victims often feel overwhelmed by the smallest things. They must deal with this and emotional irregularities. It is no wonder their stress leads to depression or anxiety. Together, these issues can cause victims great suffering.
