How to become a defensive driver
There are many steps you can take to better protect yourself when driving, with becoming a defensive driver at the top of the list.
There’s a good chance you’re already taking some steps to drive in a defensive manner. However, if you adjust your style a little bit more, you’ll feel better about your ability to avoid trouble on the road. Here are three things you should do:
- Think a few steps ahead: Rather than react on the spot, think a few steps ahead so you know how to approach any situation. For example, as you approach a red light, think about what you’ll do if a car traveling the other direction turns in front of you.
- Don’t become distracted: Defensive driving is all about paying attention to the road and putting safety above all else. When you’re distracted, such as if you’re texting or talking to your passengers, there’s a greater risk of trouble.
- Follow the rules of the road: Defensive drivers don’t violate the rules of the road. They know what’s expected of them and do whatever it takes to stay within the legal limits of the law. For example, a defensive driver will always drive the speed limit. A reckless driver, however, doesn’t care if they violate the law.
These are the types of steps you can take if you want to become a defensive driver. Unfortunately, you don’t have control over other drivers, so you should expect to come in contact with reckless and aggressive drivers every now and again.
If one of these people causes an accident, call for help, receive medical treatment and collect evidence that’ll help you obtain the compensation you deserve.
